Dr. Ryan Iwasiw has been involved in healthcare since 2000.
His path to Medicine started with his career as a registered nurse; he received his
diploma in Nursing from Medicine Hat College and then his Nursing Degree from the
University of Calgary. Over the course of the next 10 years he worked as a registered
nurse in a range of different clinical settings serving a variety of populations in Southern
Alberta, Manitoba and Southern California.
Wanting an expanded clinical role, Dr. Iwasiw completed his Masters of Nursing/Nurse
Practitioner training at the University of Manitoba. As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), he
worked primarily in the emergency setting in the city of Winnipeg, as well as delivering
primary and emergency care to remote northern communities in Manitoba.
After working several years as an NP, Dr. Iwasiw made the transition to medicine and
obtained his MD from the University of Calgary in 2015. He subsequently completed a
residency in Internal Medicine through the University of Calgary. He then went on to
complete two fellowships; one in General Internal Medicine and one in Medical
Simulation. His medical areas of interest include complex and/or chronic multi-system
disease, Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), end of life care/decision making, medical
education and medical simulation.
Dr. Iwasiw is a proud husband to his amazing wife, father to his marvelous daughter,
and poppa to his crazy but lovable bulldog. When he is not practicing medicine, he can
be found reading the latest Malcolm Gladwell book, listening to a podcast about critical
thinking/skepticism, flipping through the pages of one of his favorite comic books,
spinning a record from his vast vinyl collection, or practicing the martial art of Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu.
